Hey everyone, welcome to a New Years Eve installment of What’s New in AI, the weekly newsletter summarizing trends happening in the world of artificial intelligence. Lots of news happening through the holidays, from 2022 rewinds to NotionAI hacking to new year predictions. Let’s dive in:
2022 AI Rewind
Nvidia AI scientist Dr. Jim Fan released a wonderful compilation of the top 10 developments that happened in AI in 2022. The thread highlights the main AI models that came out this year along with some of their applications.

The pace at which progress is happening in AI is astounding. The exponential nature of such developments beg the question - what evolution will we see in the new year?
2023 AI Predictions
With the new year upon us, many are making predictions of what we will see from AI in 2023. Here are some of the top tech publications writing about their predictions:
TechCrunch predicts more art generating apps, more open source AI projects, and more AI regulation. (Source)
MIT Technology Review envisions more multipurpose chatbots, more regulation and red-tape, and a potential overpowering of big tech by AI startups. (Source)
Make sure to follow along with this newsletter to keep track of all the new developments in AI over the next year.
ChatGPT Alternatives
With ChatGPT now released for a month, there are various alternatives and adaptations being released for the model.
For example, here’s an open source project combining Google’s Pathways Language Model (PaLM) with Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) to create a similar experience to ChatGPT.

The main problem with such open source projects is that, as a user, you have to train the underlying models yourself. This requires a lot of GPU resources and time, which most people don’t have access to. For this reason alone, the ChatGPT model is seemingly still is the best “off the shelf” tool on the market.
Companies are also creating custom adaptations of ChatGPT for their own customers. Here’s a thread with a list of companies that successfully added a GPT model variant to their services:
AI Art Competition & Community
Over the last few weeks, Tim Ferriss hosted an AI art competition for his new NFT project - Cockpunch. This week, he finally announced the winners of the challenge. There were some pretty cool community creations, with the winners taking home $2,000 each.

There seems to be a new wave of community and creator interaction through the form of AI. From Tome’s AI presentation generator community showcase to Tim Ferriss’s competition, there are now seemingly even more ways to engage a community of followers with the help of AI.
NotionAI
Notion recently announced their AI powered assistant for their note taking platform. They have steadily been onboarding users from their massive waitlist (https://www.notion.so/product/ai).
Swyx was one of the people who had the chance to get onboarded this week. In typical developer - hacker fashion, he immediately used prompt injection to figure out what prompts NotionAI uses for their AI assistant.
I got access to the public alpha of Notion AI yesterday, and within 2 hours I had used prompt injection to obtain the complete source prompts of every Notion AI feature
If you’re interested about what NotionAI offers and / or how Swyx was able to hack it, give his post a read:

Almost End to End AI Video Creation
Indiepreneur @levelsio tweeted a step-by-step process of how he was able to create a fully AI generated video in 5 minutes with just 4 tools and minimal human intervention.

While the video creation process wasn’t fully end to end with AI (some human involvement had to take place with putting the steps together and editing of the video), it goes to show how simple short video content creation has become. No doubt that creators on video platforms such as TikTok will be using such tools to their advantage.
2022 Research Papers
All AI evolution stems from AI research, with findings usually released in the form of research papers. Twitter user @_akhaliq compiled a list of some of the most important research papers published in 2022. Check out the thread here:

Fun Bites
@mehran__jalali built an AI assistant for spreadsheets, essentially giving users superpowers on top of Google Sheets. Take a look at his twitter thread showcasing some of the coolest features of the product. If you want to try the tooling yourself, here’s the signup link.

@mdolon built a Speech-to-AI tool that lets you interface with generative AI directly through voice. It’s an interesting exploration of how we can evolve the human-AI input interface.

That’s all the highlights for this week. Check out my Twitter list of AI builders who I’m following.
I also built a small website https://newinai.com where I post the latest news from the AI world on a daily basis. If you want to stay up to date with the space in a more realtime fashion, be sure to check it out.
Have a Happy New Year!
