Hey everyone, Happy New Year! Welcome to the first 2023 edition of What’s New in AI, the weekly newsletter summarizing trends happening in the world of artificial intelligence. Lots of news coming out from the first week of the year, from speculations of market bubbles, to Bing integrating with GPT, to more hackathons. Let’s dive in:
Generative AI Bubble
The generative AI bubble is seemingly beginning to emerge, according to a recent survey of more than 35 investors by TechCrunch.
While several investors said they were bullish on the new technology overall, they also admitted that the sector was likely to get lost in its own hype.
Almost half of those surveyed mentioned generative AI as the likely location of the next bubble.
This can also be clearly observed in trends of previously viral apps such as LensaAI.

While the consumer facing generative AI bubble may be growing, it can also be argued that the surface is barely scratched. One has to ask - how does the current hype surrounding generative AI compare to previous technological breakthroughs like the internet and the iPhone, and what can we learn from these past examples as we consider the potential applications of this new technology?
ChatGPT Costs
ChatGPT is very expensive. For now, OpenAI and their venture dollars are taking the hit. Contrary Research performed an analysis on OpenAI’s ChatGPT model and concluded that costs are at least $100K per day to run it (but most likely way higher).

This begs the question - how will the hidden costs ChatGPT ultimately affect developers and end users in the long run? Will these costs be passed on to the consumer, or will they be absorbed by the company offering the API? How will these costs impact the adoption and usage of ChatGPT in the future?
For now, we’re all enjoying the free second brain, but soon enough we might have to put money in to continue.
Bing GPT
Microsoft's $1 Billion investment in OpenAI may be paying off. The company prepares to launch a version of its Bing search engine that uses the AI models behind ChatGPT to answer search queries.

The new feature, which could launch before the end of March, is intended to help Microsoft outflank Google, its larger search rival. It is unclear how this development will impact Google's search dominance, but it is certainly a significant move by Microsoft in the search engine market.
Would you switch to Bing if it supported ChatGPT search?
LLM Fine-Tuning
Interested in fine-tuning custom GPT models to your own use case?
Patterns, a platform that provides building blocks for next-gen AI systems, wrote an article about their process of fine-tuning OpenAI’s davinci-003 GPT model.
Their end goal was to build a slack bot that responded to technical support questions with knowledge from their technical documentation, community slack channels, and previous support tickets.
The article outlines the steps involved in generating training data, fine-tuning the model, and serving the fine-tuned model as a Slack bot. It also provides a detailed walkthrough of the code needed to build the bot, including examples of how to generate training data and how to fine-tune the model.
More AI Hackathons
Scale AI, the data platform for AI, has announced a generative AI and LLM hackathon that will be held at their headquarters in San Francisco on January 21st.
The event will feature prizes such as a Napa tour, skydiving, and drones, as well as workshops on advanced prompt engineering. The hackathon will also be judged by notable figures in the field of AI, including Andrej Karpathy.

HTTPie is building a new way to interact with APIs, simplifying the workflow of developers with AI.
@imjaredz built an awesome tool for developers who are working with the OpenAI API. With promptlayer.com, it becomes much easier to track, debug, and replay GPT prompts.
